Gasparilla Pirate Festival is a popular celebration here in Tampa Bay that takes place at the end of January or beginning February. It celebrates the memory or legend of Jose Gaspar, the Spanish pirate who supposedly operated out of West Florida. Either way it is a great reason to throw a city-wide party. And it is wild!
If you get a chance, a great thing to do is to go out on a boat and follow the pirate ship into Tampa, where it docs downtown. And that is not the only thing going on. There is a parade with floats and lots of parties all over town. I think of it as Tampa celebrating Tampa.
The Gasparilla Pendant Design
This pendant design was commissioned by a Gasparilla lover who came to me and wanted to commemorate this grand party and all it stands for. So, we designed a little Gasparilla-style pendant. There is no pirate ship on the pendant. The client wanted to capture instead the spirit of the party. So, along with having Gasparillas as the main inspiration the influence of the Mardi Gras, you can see the influence of the Carribbean and plain old decadent fun. When you come in for a jewelry design, you are in the driver’s seat.
If you have not been to Gasparilla, I highly recommend it. Best is to be on a boat and to join the pirate ship as enters Tampa. It can get a little squirrely with all the boats in the water, but you’ll get to follow the pirate ship as it makes its way to Tampa. If that is not possible, then there is the parade downtown and lot’s of fun to be had everywhere.
The next Gasparilla is scheduled for January 19, 2013. The below website has more information. You can turn off the sound, if you find it as annoying as I do!
